An exemption depends on the purchase

Some vehicle purchases by eligible Status First Nations individuals qualify for GST and Saskatchewan PST relief. First Nations identity alone does not make every purchase tax-exempt. The applicable legal status, documents, sale and delivery arrangements must meet the relevant rules.

Tell the selling dealership that you want to discuss a potentially exempt purchase before agreeing to the transaction. Ask it to confirm the GST and PST treatment separately and record the arrangements in writing.

GST requirements

The Canada Revenue Agency generally provides GST/HST relief on eligible property bought on a reserve, or bought off reserve and delivered to a reserve by the vendor or its agent. The vendor must keep the required eligibility and delivery evidence. Taking possession off reserve and transporting the vehicle to a reserve yourself generally does not meet the vendor-delivery requirement.

CRA's policy uses the legal term “Indian” under the Indian Act. This particular exemption does not apply to Métis or Inuit purchasers solely because of that identity, and some treaty or self-government arrangements can affect relief.

Saskatchewan PST requirements

Saskatchewan's vehicle-sales bulletin describes an exemption for qualifying sales or leases when the transaction is finalized on reserve and the vehicle is delivered to a reserve by the vendor or a carrier arranged by the vendor. Supporting records include eligibility documents, proof of delivery and an Exempt Motor Vehicle Sales Certificate.

Before you buy

  • Ask the dealership to confirm eligibility and both taxes before the sale.
  • Agree on the required delivery and paperwork arrangements in advance.
  • Confirm the final price and financing costs in the written agreements.

Tax relief does not guarantee financing approval or a particular interest rate. You do not need to upload a status card or other identity documents with this website's initial contact inquiry.

Planning from the Prince Albert region

If you live in or travel through Prince Albert, see the regional First Nations vehicle guide for practical document, travel and reserve-delivery questions. It does not replace the tax rules on this page.

Official guidance

Checked October 25, 2026. See CRA's GST/HST and First Nations guidance, CRA bulletin B-039, and Saskatchewan tax programs, and vehicle-sales bulletin PST-18. The selling dealership must confirm how the rules apply to your transaction.
